چکیده

Researchers in the field of OMR (Optical Music Recognition) have acknowledged that the automatic transcription of medieval musical manuscripts is still an open problem [2, 3], mainly due to lack of standards in notation and the physical quality of the documents. Nonetheless, the amount of medieval musical manuscripts is so vast that the consensus seems to be that OMR can be a vital tool to help in the preserving and sharing of this information in digital format. In this paper we report our results on a preliminary approach to OMR of medieval plainchant manuscripts in square notation, at the symbol classification level, which produced good results in the recognition of eight basic symbols. Our preliminary approach consists of the preprocessing, segmentation, and classification stages.

In Search of a Dataset for Handwritten Optical Music Recognition: Introducing MUSCIMA++

Optical Music Recognition (OMR) has long been without an adequate dataset and ground truth for evaluating OMR systems, which has been a major problem for establishing a state of the art in the field. Furthermore, machine learning methods require training data. We analyze how the OMR processing pipeline can be expressed in terms of gradually more complex ground truth, and based on this analysis ...

An optical music recognition system for traditional Chinese Kunqu Opera scores written in Gong-Che Notation

This paper presents an optical music recognition (OMR) system to process the handwritten musical scores of Kunqu Opera written in Gong-Che Notation (GCN). First, it introduces the background of Kunqu Opera and GCN. Kunqu Opera is one of the oldest forms of musical activity, spanning the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, and GCN has been the most popular notation for recording musical works in ...

Automatic Handwritten Mensural Notation Interpreter: From Manuscript to MIDI Performance

This paper presents a novel automatic recognition framework for hand-written mensural music. It takes a scanned manuscript as input and yields as output modern music scores. Compared to the previous mensural Optical Music Recognition (OMR) systems, ours shows not only promising performance in music recognition, but also works as a complete pipeline which integrates both recognition and transcri...

Online content-searchable databases of music scores, unlike text databases, are extremely rare. The main reasons are the cost of digitization, the inaccessibility of original music scores and manuscripts, and the lack of sophisticated music recognition software. The proposed research seeks to circumvent these difficulties by investigating the feasibility of using existing microfilms for digitiz...

Lyric Extraction and Recognition on Digital Images of Early Music Sources

Optical music recognition (OMR) is one of the most promising tools for generating large-scale, distributable libraries of musical data. Much OMR work has focussed on instrumental music, avoiding a special challenge vocal music poses for OMR: lyric recognition. Lyrics complicate the page layout, making it more difficult to identify the regions of the page that carry musical notation. Furthermore...
